Mailchimp sends the email. Loyalist knows who should get it.
Mailchimp is a general-purpose email and SMS platform used by millions of businesses, and the builder and deliverability are genuinely good. Loyalist’s difference is the record that feeds it: it reads the check and the booking, writes notes back into Resy, and reports a send in covers booked, not opens.
Mailchimp
An email and SMS marketing platform.
- 01A newsletter is the job. You want templates, a drag and drop builder and reliable delivery at a low price.
- 02Most of your marketing lives outside the dining room, in e-commerce, merchandise, ticketing or a mailing list you have grown for years.
- 03You are happy owning the list yourself, importing and cleaning contacts as they arrive from forms and other tools.
Loyalist
The AI platform that turns guest data into revenue.
- 01You want one profile per guest, built from all your guest data, and personalized campaigns and automations that run off it and drive revenue.
- 02You want to target on what someone actually spent and ordered. The guests who spent over $200 on wine and have not been back since spring are a segment you can send to today.
- 03You want the send to reach the floor. Tags and notes write back into Resy, SevenRooms and OpenTable, so the host greets the guest the campaign just targeted.
Mailchimp and Loyalist, axis by axis.
Both send email and SMS well. The split is what decides who gets the message: a list you maintain, or a guest record the room writes for you.
| Axis | Mailchimp | Loyalist |
|---|---|---|
| Built around | Email and SMS to an audience you manage. | One guest profile from every connected system, so a send can target what someone actually spent. |
| Who it is for | Any business that markets by email and SMS, in any industry. | Full-service hospitality groups, from one room to fifty locations. |
| Where the data comes from | Contacts you import, plus 300+ app integrations. | POS, reservations, reviews, events and delivery, resolved to one person. |
| Who you can send to | Any contact on the list you have built and maintain. | Your whole guestbook, or a segment built from visits, spend or what was ordered. |
| How results are counted | Opens, clicks and campaign revenue. | Visits and spend, tied to the journey that produced them. |
Where the two overlap, and what usually happens next.
Mailchimp can stay where it is at first, with Loyalist choosing who the message goes to. The two overlap on sending. They differ upstream of it. To send Mailchimp your wine spenders, somebody exports the POS and merges the duplicates by hand. Loyalist holds that segment already, and reports the send back as covers booked.
- Email and SMS campaigns, built and sent
- Audience segments cut from the contact data you already hold
- Marketing for any business, in hospitality or well outside it
- See the revenue each send actually booked, read back from Resy, SevenRooms or OpenTable
- Segments built from the check, the booking and what was ordered
- Notes and tags written back into the reservation book before service
- Google, Yelp and TripAdvisor reviews in one inbox with replies drafted
- A routed phone line that hands a recognized VIP straight to a manager
What you get with Loyalist.
- Send to people, not addresses. Loyalist builds the profile from the check, the booking, the review and the private event. Mailchimp sends to the list you give it, and the list is only ever as current as the last export.
- Target on what they spent. Spend, cover count, what was ordered and time since the last booking are all queryable. Mailchimp segments on the contact data you uploaded and on how people engaged with email.
- Your host greets them by name. Notes and tags go into Resy, SevenRooms and OpenTable before service, so the host greets the guest the campaign just targeted. An email platform stops when the message sends.
- Bank the buyout revenue. Tripleseat and Perfect Venue sync, so the buyout that paid for December sits beside the Tuesday two-top. Banquet revenue never touches an email tool.
- See the covers a send booked. Because Loyalist reads your reservation platform, a send reports the tables it booked and the revenue behind them.

Why operators love Loyalist.
Loyalist has become indispensable to what we do.
Cedric Nicaise The Noortwyck Loyalist has helped us better understand and segment our guests so we can be more thoughtful about how we stay connected.

When is Mailchimp the better choice?
When the job really is a newsletter. Mailchimp builds and sends one better than we do and at a lower price, and if nobody needs to know the guest beyond an email address, that is a reasonable place to stay.
When is Loyalist the better choice?
When the list is costing you more than the sending. Someone is exporting the POS every month, merging duplicates and guessing at the regulars, and the sends still go to everyone. With Loyalist the audience is current on its own, the guests who spent on wine and have not been back are a segment you can reach today, and the host greets them when they walk in.
Can we keep Mailchimp and add Loyalist?
Yes, and plenty of groups start that way. The two run side by side rather than syncing, since Mailchimp is not on our integrations hub today. Loyalist builds the guest record from your POS, reservations, reviews and events, so the segments it produces do not depend on the list you keep over there.
Does Loyalist send email and SMS itself?
Yes, both, plus a VIP text line your team can answer. The difference is not the sending. It is what decides who gets the message and what the team knows when that guest walks in.
Mailchimp costs less. Why pay more?
It does, and the comparison worth making is what each one returns rather than what it costs. Loyalist connects to your reservation platform, so a campaign comes back carrying the tables it booked and the revenue those tables brought in. That is measured, not modelled. Most of the groups we work with are past the payback point inside one to two months, and win-back journeys bring back 10 to 30 percent of the lapsed guests who receive them, with 30 percent being the top performers. An email platform can tell you who opened.
Which is better for a restaurant group, Mailchimp or Loyalist?
For building and sending a newsletter, Mailchimp, and it is not close. For deciding who should receive it, Loyalist. The practical difference shows up in the report afterwards. Loyalist reads your reservation book, so a send comes back with the covers it booked and the revenue behind them rather than an open rate. You can tell which campaign filled a quiet Tuesday, and send that one again.
Can Mailchimp segment on what a guest spent in the dining room?
Only if you put that number into Mailchimp yourself and keep it current. Mailchimp segments on whatever is in the contact record, and the contact record holds what you last imported. Loyalist reads the check directly, so spend, visit count and what was ordered are current without anybody running an export.
What happens to our existing Mailchimp list?
Keep it. Loyalist neither imports it nor needs it. The guestbook is assembled from the systems already running in your rooms, so it fills in from your own history rather than from a list somebody has been maintaining by hand.
Does Loyalist read from our point of sale and reservation book?
That is the whole mechanism. There are 42 integrations live today across 17 point-of-sale systems and 5 reservation platforms, and the reservation ones are written back to as well as read from. If your POS is on the list, the guestbook builds itself from service.
